Rail trails are cyclists' heaven: mild gradients, good surface, wonderful scenery and no traffic. The ride takes us along the a section of the East Gippsland Rail Trail passing a magnificent trestle bridge and historic Costicks Weir. Turning down off the Rail Trail we take it's less well known little sister, the Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail. A twisting and dipping trail through the forest drops down to the old quarry, the source of rock for the breakwater at Lakes Entrance. From here the our route is a rail trail in miniature, following the old tram line through manna gums and dusty daisies as it winds it's way over bridges and past ferns beside the creek. Lunch (nude food) is in a forest clearing surrounded by massive ancient trees.
