Rail Trails are made for families: no cars, small hills and regular ice cream stops. We've put together a tour just for families, covering three rail trails over four days. Manageable distances each day ( 30 -40 km), family friendly accommodation, a support vehicle to jump aboard whenever little legs get tired and all your gear carried for you. Fuss free breakfasts and lunches each day are provided, with pubs to eat at each night so everyone can relax.
The tour starts and finishes just one hour out of Melbourne at Leongatha on the Saturday of the Melbourne Cup "long weekend", where we return to early afternoon on Tuesday. In between we will ride the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail, the short but sweet Yarram to Alberton trail, the Old Port Albert Road, and the Great Southern Rail Trail. There are lots of places to discover near the trail so if there is energy to burn at the end of the day we'll go exploring!

We meet up in Leongatha, and load up the bikes for the drive (just over one hour) to Glengarry to the Gippsland Plains Trail. With a back drop of the mountains, the trail traverses flat farming land, passing a tiny town every 10 km (Ice cream stop?). Todays ride is a total of 40 km, through to little Tinamba to a guesthouse set amongst the cows.
Back onto the Gippsland Plains Trail for another 18 km, taking us through the bustling country town of Maffra to Stratford, which sits on the Avon River. Rest time in the bus as we drive to Yarram, with a stop for lunch along the way. Yarram is the start of the tiny Tarra Trail, which goes just 7 km on to Alberton, followed by a the fabulous Port Albert trail, winding through the tea-trees, coastal heath, mangroves right into the Port itself.
A short drive to Port Welshpool, and we start the Great Southern Rail Trail next to the sea. The little towns of Welshpool, Toora and Foster sit amongst lush farmland along the trail: our destination for the night is Fish Creek, with glorious views to Wilsons Promontory along the way. The total days ride is 37 km.
Rolling out from Fish Creek on the last day of riding, with 37 km back to Leongatha to go. Meeniyan with it's scarecrows ( and great cafes), the bridges across the Tarwin River and foodie heaven Koonwarra are all on the way today. We will ride back into Leongatha early in afternoon.
