Saturday

Meet up in Leongatha at 11.00 am - at just over an hour from Melbourne's CBD this makes for a leisurely start to the long weekend. Set off down the Great Southern Rail Trail and wrestle with the decision of whether to have lunch at the tiny foodie mecca of Koonwarra in 9 km, or push on to Meeniyan with it's plethora of cafes. Pretend you are riding off lunch with the 20 km ride to Fish Creek, with a browse at the Buffalo Emporium along the way. Fish Creek has galleries, fish (stationary) and a lovely beer garden to investigate.

Sunday

The trail climbs our of Fish Creek up the only hill of the ride, through a corridor of pine trees. At the top of the hill take a breather admiring the stunning view over Corner Inlet to the peaks of Wilsons Prom, before whizzing down the long hill into Toora. From Toora the trail traverses flat dairy country, with the steep hills of the Strezlecki Ranges and wind turbines as back drop. Toora offers a range of eating options, or push on to Port Welshpool for fish and chips by the sea. Jump aboard the bus and it's back to Fish Creek for the night.

Monday

After breakfast we'll load up and drive to Wonthaggi to the start of the Bass Coast Trail which passes right on top of the dunes at little Kilcunda. From there it sweeps around the base of the hills to Woolamai a tiny village at the base of the hills. If the wind is blowing against us, we'll just drive to the other end of the trail, and ride in the opposite direction. Headwinds - gone! After lunch it's back on the bus and back to Leongatha: we'll be there by about 2.30 ready to get back to Melbourne at a civilised hour at the end of a long weekend.

Tempted but can't make these dates?

Australian Cycle Holidays can set you up for a weekend ( or weekday) getaway on the trail at a time to suit you.
