Three and Four Day Itineraries

Three Days or Four to Cycle the East Gippsland Rail Trail?

Three days (100km) is a relaxed pace to enjoy the whole East Gippsland Rail Trail. With only a couple of towns to staying along the way a typical three day ride looks like this:

Day 1: Ride from Bairnsdale to Bruthen, 30 km of gentle undulating farmland scenery. Cross the Nicholson River over the spectacular original rail bridge, maybe visit a winery for lunch, and relish the gently downhill for 12 km as you zoom into the Tambo River Valley to the cute little town of Bruthen perched above the river.

Day 2: Bruthen to Nowa Nowa area, 27 - 37 km of cycling through the forest with just the birds, wildflowers and occasional wallaby for company. The magnificent Stony Creek Trestle Bridge tells you it's only 6 km to Nowa Nowa, a quirky little town with unexpected treasures: a lake, a gorge, unique timber collection and great food. Stop here for the night, or head on for another 10 km for farmstay accommodation.

Day 3: Nowa Nowa area to Orbost, 40 - 30 km, riding through a mix of forest and farmland, with a glorious downhill taking you to the wide and lush Snowy River farmland and long historic trestle bridge.

Four days (150 km) gives you time to take the Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail as a side trip to spend a night in Lakes Entrance. The Discovery Trail is a dedicated cycle / walking trail for 17 km through the forest, with the final 8 km of ride into Lakes Entrance on road. Here is what the itinerary looks like:

Day 1: Ride from Bairnsdale to Bruthen, 30 km as above.

Day 2: Bruthen to Lakes Entrance 38 km . Taking the Rail Trail for the first 13 km, the Discovery Trail branches down through the forest, past an historic quarry and following Missisippi Creek for much of it's length.(and adjoins the Colquhoun Mountain Bike Park, for those who'd like to spice up their day with a serve of single track). The final on road section into the town of Lakes Entrance includes a glorious view of the ocean before a final downhill into town.

**Day 3: Lakes Entrance to Nowa Nowa area, 42 ** A number of forestry roads provide a range of options for returning to the rail trail, to continue on to Nowa Nowa.

Day 4: Nowa Nowa area to Orbost, 40 km. as above

You can do this trip equally enjoyably in reverse - Orbost to Bairnsdale. There is no advantage riding one direction over the other for hills or wind.

Tailored Packages

Tailored to suit you.

The packages above are just a starting point for us to tailor a package specifically to suit you. Some of the things you might like to amend:

  • Ebike hire instead of standard, if you need a big of extra oomph on your side.
  • No bike hire. We understand your own bike is special!
  • Dont need the daily luggage transfer? Let us know if you are happy to carry your own things.
  • Extra nights accommodation at start or finish of the trip.
  • Rest day: Lakes Entrance is a great place to spend an extra day exploring, or just taking time out of the saddle.
  • More days. Add an extra days cycling near Bairnsdale, exploring Raymond Island and the Silt Jetties, or quiet roads along the Snowy River near Orbost.
  • Less days. You can cycle the trail over two days with a 60 km / 40 km split: if you are up for a challenge, you can of course do it in one!
